7/03/05 I have watched them do this one multiple occasions---and yet I have no explanation whatsoever for their behavior.  They drive down deeply into the mud with their hind legs, scoop out a double handful, walk out of the water on their hind legs--looking far more like a primate than North America's largest RODENT--and carefully deposit their mass of mud on a mound.  If anyone has any insight on this behavior, please email me.

      Never mind.  :) -It took YEARS---but I finally figured out (More like, was explicitly told.  :) ;) ) what this is all about.  -Not all beavers live in lodges.  Some tunnel out homes for themselves---this also explains what I've seen, kayaking, on the [Chena] river. . . .  -They're just "sprucing up the roof."  :) :)
