For more years than I would care to admit, I have been very nearly obsessed, with the arctic tundra.  I almost went there once--without even knowing it.  One time, I very nearly drove to Chisasibi/Fort George---and the Eastern shore of James Bay sports the southern-most extent of arctic tundra in the entire world.

Now, normally, when I wish to experience something beyond my reach, I turn to the 'Net---vicarious enjoyment is (usually) better than none.  However, I found, there are VERY few pictures of true arctic tundra on the Web.  -That was one of the major motivations for the construction and subsequent distribution, of this page.  So, enjoy the near-unparalled beauty, and purity, of the far, far north.

   The tundra--in bloom.

Some bluffs (I honestly can't remember their name. . . .), just south of Prudhoe Bay.  -Notice the mid-July snow.

   *ADDENDUM* (These are Franklin Bluffs.)

Tundra, with river--just south of Prudhoe Bay.

Tundra--with "ripples of earth," caused by permafrost action.

*ADDENDUM* I have subsequently learned that this is called "solifluction"---the slow, downhill movement of soil or other material in areas typically underlain by frozen ground.  www.dictionary.com

One thing we were not prepared for were tundra mirages.  Apparently, the sun "has effect" this time of year--and this makes the tundra warm(er) ( :) )--than the surrounding air.  It gave mountains the appearance of levitating on over the horizon.

Give me more pictures of the Tundra!
